Too hot to handle, September 15, 2008
By D. Zhang (Mountain View, CA) -
I have Lenovo 767593U X61 Laptop laptop. It's great except an Achilles' heel which makes it unusable. The right palm rest overheats to the point that the keyboard is not usable. Lenovo 767593U X61 is a well-known problem among X61 owners, and an open issue for Lenovo, for which they have not fixed. Read the following pages before you buy this.

I'd recommend staying away from this laptop unless you plan to
1) never use wifi
2) always bring an external USB keyboard
The same issue applies to X61 Tablet PC.
Solid performer, but has pesky habits, August 21, 2008
By TheMemoryHole (USA) - Ok, I want to say first I am a big fan of Lenovo products.
My first was a T40 which I bought from Overstock.com; I adored it but Lenovo 767593U X61 Laptop was stolen after a break in. I then moved up to an T60 briefly, which I also thought was terrific but with a return to grad school looming I decided to upgrade to a lighter machine, which brings me to my current piece of hardware, the X61. I've had it for about six months now so I've had plenty of time to get used to what this ultraportable has to offer. In all, there's much to recommend in this machine. It's very small, very light and packs a powerful computing punch given its specs. Like all Lenovo's (at least the ones I've experienced)it's built like a tank. The keyboard is responsive, the casing is strong and the sleek black styling is ideal for me. I invested in the extended battery and have been glad I did, given that I keep lots of my settings--such as screen brightness--maxed out even when on battery power. It adds a little depth to the machine but since its so compact to begin with you don't really notice it. My computer has a 1.6 ghz processor and only 80 gigs of harddrive space, but I did opt for 3 gigs of RAM as I use Photoshop often. The computer seems very capable of handling large files in photoshop and even running some other programs in the background without bogging down too much. Performance is solid, though this may be aided by the fact I opted for XP NOT Vista which we all know is a very graphics heavy interface and requires a big chunk of RAM just to keep it operating up to specs.
So, where are the downsides? you may be asking. There are a few. And while none of them are dealbreakers they deserve mention. If you don't want to read through my list, then just know this. If x60s are still orderable I'd get one INSTEAD of the x61. My wife has an x60 and has NONE of the problems I experience with its newer cousin. True this is completely anecdotal but I am here to pass it along anyway. If you want to hear my specific issues with this laptop then by all means read on...
First, the cooling fan on this baby runs CONSTANTLY. Basically, anytime the machine is on. Even if the room temp is cool, expect the fan to come on. The noise is not horrible but it's definately noticeable. Perhaps this is simply a function of such a small machine and so much computing power. I've heard complaints about this from other users, though, so I don't think it's unique to my machine. Lenovo was supposed to have an update to correct this but I loaded it and the fan still stays on most of the time.
Second, the WIFI card, which is encased under the right palm rest, gets rather HOT at times. Not always and not with every WIFI system I'm surfing on. I don't know what the variables are that influence it. For instance, right now i'm on ATT WIFI with a 2WIRE router at home and it's fine. At other times though, I've been at home and felt like I could nearly fry an egg on the palm rest. This gets irritating and can be somewhat distracting when you type. Word has it there is supposed to be a SECOND cooling fan solely for the WIFI card that you can order and have installed. (Oh yea! A second fan to run CEASELESSLY!) But I haven't moved on this issue.
Third, the computer seems to freeze about 2-3x out of every 20 startups. I'm not sure if this is due to stuff I've loaded on it or not, but it does get annoying.
Fourth, the screen is really mediocre. Even with brightness maxed out it's dim by my standards. And "plugged in" max is brighter than "battery max". I really like a bright screen and vivid colors, but I was willing to sacrifice it for ease of transport. If this is an important issue for you, this is NOT the machine for you.
Fifth, the computer does make a weird sound every now and then. It sounds like a tiny metallic spring being released from tension. I have no clue if this is exclusive to my machine or some mechanism that is audible in all x61s.
I think that's it. Would I buy one again? As I said above, probably not IF I could get my hands on a new x60. Or maybe the x300 or IdeaPad ultraportables. But overall this really is a nice machine. Just know you're getting a product that very likely may have a few quirks.
Oh, one last note: I'm not sure about the x61 advertised on this page. It says it has a DVD-RW but it's my understanding NONE of the x61s have built-in optical drives. Maybe I misread something, or maybe it's an external one you can connect through USB or something. Just an FYI.
